Is there any way to determine when my amp was made? It looks like the serial number was maybe written in pencil at one time, but that's long gone. Is there a particular feature set that goes with certain manufacturing periods?

Most of the 400s were furnished in the green carpet finish, have a black / green control panel and a black chassis although some very early models may have the grey pimple tolex, grey control panel and a grey chassis. The 400 was an evolution from the older 350SMX model although the differences between the two are negligable apparently.
Your amp probably dates from somewhere between '97 and '99 when it was superceded by the 500w (R)AH 500 -12. If it's a re-badged earlier model then it may go back as far as '95 although the older 350w model dates from about '92 - 93. If you're feeling adventureous, you could pop the chassis out and lift the lid where you'll find the testing / QC stickers with the dates hand written on or around the transformer.
I loved my 400 SMX, it was the best 12 band model I owned..

Thanks! Looks like I have a '97 - '99 model. I'll have to take it apart again and look.
Funny story about this amp - my band was playing a nighttime outdoor show last summer near a river in Central Texas. There were LOTS of bugs out. Ever notice how "bug zappers" use black light to attract bugs? Want to take a guess where a metric crap ton of bugs ended up?
Yep, inside my amp.

Sounds like the perfect excuse to pull it apart! Ha!
I really liked my 400, it was a great amp but I couldn't justify keeping it and the V4 plus I wanted to buy motorbikes..

Just noticed your FJ in your avatar. Spectacular motorcycles. I like old stuff, myself. I currently have a 1969 Honda CB-350 apart for restoration, as well as a 1974 Yamaha MX-360, also awaiting a top end. My "new" (ahem...) bike is a 1983 Yamaha Virago 750 Midnight Special. That one is almost ready to go!

I love my FJs, I currently have two.
The one in the pic is my main bike, it's reasonably standard and in really quite good condition given it's 23 years and nearly 94 thousand miles. I bought it 5 years ago and have done around 50 thousand miles in that time. It's survived several European tours including many laps of the Nurburgring, a blast through the French / Swiss / Italian Alps and the toturous turns of the Picos mountains in Spain. Never once has it let me down or failed to get me home.
The other is an earlier '87 1TX model which is undergoing some big mods including high compression Wiseco pistons, FZR wheels and suspension and a powder coated frame. This too survived the Nurburgring.
I have a little 'pocket rocket' for blasts out in the shape of an '89 Honda VFR 400 NC30 although I was knocked off it by a car driver back in August. This bike is currently awaiting repairs but I nearly have all the parts to begin it's restoration now. A stunningly brilliant little machine.
Lastly is my classic CX500A which is in pristine condition. It's a lovely old thing for a steady run to the cafe on a Thursday evening, it always gets a crowd of old boys saying 'I used have one of these just like this one' which is always cool.
I posted some pix in the general discussion board..
